Emerson Encounters
I’ve been feeling argumentative lately. Emerson is my outlet: his work was made for arguing with. The man never met a qualifier, never used a “maybe” or “in some cases.” I live in qualifiers.
In a way It’s odd I suppose to post these reflections publicly. I’m doing so because I love engaging with a classic text—not treating it as holy writ, something to like or dislike, or material to master for a class, but really rubbing up against it and letting it spark an internal conversation.
I got the idea of encountering Emerson this way from a breezy fiction series called The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lyon by Beth Brower.
